It felt right to choose the Playwright Celtic Pub for my theater-filled Wednesday, July 5th. The other selling point? I was seeing 1 play, 1 studios tour, and 1 musical, so needed to stick near the Theater District.
The pub was packed, but their rooftop beer garden had plenty of empty seats when I arrived. Not surprising, as the sun was directly overhead and the stairs to get up there are steep.
Wanting something easy, but filling, I got their Celtic Pub Burger with fries. Huge, but just okay in taste. The fries were fine.
After some hemming and hawing, I decided to splurge and order a discounted specialty cocktail called the Bourbon Strawberry Smash to enjoy with lunch. It predominantly consisted of Jim Beam Black Bourbon, club soda, strawberries, etc., blending bitter with sweet really well. Given Playwright’s high prices, I confess I would have stuck with water had the cocktail not been discounted as a lunch special.
Overall, Playwright Celtic Pub seems like a great place for groups of 3 or 4 people. The groups that joined me in the rooftop beer garden certainly were having a great time when I headed out to catch A Doll’s House, Part 2*.
