Before I saw Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812*, I knew I needed to grab some more caffeine after a long day walking all over New York. Truth be told, I was actually heading to another shop when I spotted Café Grumpy and decided to go there instead.
As I walked in through the door, I quickly discovered it could have been a grump-inducing day for the staff. The café’s AC was on the fritz. This meant most of their potential customers were taking a step in, being graciously informed of the issue as the heat hit, and quickly noping out.
After five years of Nagasaki summers, the heat was warm, but completely doable. I was also impressed by how jovial the staff remained despite, I imagine, it being several degrees higher behind the counter next to all that steaming machinery.
I ordered an iced coffee and sat for a spell at their communal-but-then-currently-vacant table made of dark wood. The iced coffee wasn’t like most places. You know, all ice and a trickle of coffee. For the amount you receive, it was well worth the price.
For a decent cup of coffee, I recommend checking out Café Grumpy. Unlike its mascot, you’ll definitely leave with your spirits lifted and caffeinated.
