NYC Eats: Milk Bar

Told by several people I just HAD to try Crack Pie, I headed to Milk Bar’s shop on the Upper West Side. One of 9 locations in New York City alone, Milk Bar Upper West Side is a desserts shop that offers sweets, limited seating, and free wifi.

Dutifully following my friends’ orders, I purchased a slice of Crack Pie. I also got an iced coffee to wash down the pie and a compost cookie, named for combining sweet and salty ingredients, for later.

The Crack Pie reminded me of a denser, crunchier gooey butter cake. I was later informed by a friend of a friend the texture largely depends on how fresh the pie is. Well, I suspect I might have gotten a stale slice as mine nearly broke the plastic fork I was given.

Don’t get me wrong, the taste was good. It just wasn’t as amazing, or addiction forming, as I was led to believe. It might stem from being served the now defunct, St. Louis-based Haas Gooey Butter Cake by my maternal grandparents several times over the course of my childhood. Unfortunately, this set a really high standard.

With the compost cookie, I ended up keeping it in my bag over the next few days. I’d snap off a piece if I needed a bit of a sugar/salt rush, but just a bit. It was super rich.

I think, if I were in my teens, Milk Bar’s sweetness levels would be right up my alley. At present, their goods are a bit too sweet for me, and my teeth, to rightly enjoy.
